Eruption of the Technium - Print

from 12.00

Kevin Kelly theorized that all our technology is actually a rapidly-evolving symbiotic organism, which he called the technium - and that it's up to us to choose the direction of its growth and to keep it from becoming parasitic. It grows ever more complex and with our help, continually evolves ways to insinuate itself into our lives so we can never live without it.

One of its roles in to be our new eyes, for without it, we are blind to anything but the tiniest fraction of the universe. Without our technium prosthetics, we're limited to the visible spectrum at our human timescale. With it, we can perceive spectra as long as radiowaves (and even gravity waves!) and as short as gamma rays and beyond. We can see on timescales as short as a femtosecond, and even the slowness of continental drift. And we can see as far as 13.8 billion light years away, almost to the very moment the universe was created...
